2011/2012 FA Cup Semi-Finals

Late drama decided the first semi-final between Liverpool and Merseyside rivals Everton. Nikica Jelavic took full advantage of Jamie Carragher's mistake to give Everton the lead after 24-minutes. Sylvain Distin then returned the favour by playing a back-pass straight into the path of Luis Suarez, the Uruguayan made no mistake to equalise on 62-minutes. Liverpool then won the game three minutes from the end with Andy Carroll heading home a corner to set up the opportunity for domestic cup double.

In the second semi-final, it ended up not being too much of a contest as Chelsea put five past Tottenham. Didier Drogba opened the scoring two minutes before half-time with a curler into the top corner. Juan Mata made it 2-0 four minutes after the restart although replays showed that all the ball hadn't crossed the line by the time Benoit Assou-Ekotto had cleared. The goal stood to Tottenham's dismay and Gareth Bale had to pull one back on 56-minutes. It turned out to be a consolation as Ramires made it 3-1 on 77-minutes before Frank Lampard smashed a free-kick home four minutes later. The final nail in the coffin came in injury time with Florent Malouda finishing after being put through. Chelsea will meet Liverpool in the FA Cup on the same day they were due to meet in the Premiership.

2011/2012 CL QF 1st Leg pt1 & FA Cup QF Replay

The first two quarter final first legs took place as Apoel Nicosia hosted Real Madrid and Chelsea visited Benfica. There was no surprise to see Real Madrid take an advantage back to the Bernabeu but all credit to Apoel as it took 73-minutes before Karim Benzema finally broke the Cypriot hearts. Kaka then added a second nine minutes from time before Benzema added his second in the final minute of normal time. It looks very likely that Jose Mourinho's side have booked their place in the last four.

Chelsea will also take an advantage back home with them, although it's much tighter than Madrid's. The only goal of the game came with 16-minutes remaining, Salomon Kalou scoring a vital away goal for the English side. Chelsea could have potentially one foot in the semis but the job is definitely not complete just yet.

Back in England, there was the matter of two FA Cup quarter finals to be settled. Everton travelled to Sunderland to contest their replay with Tottenham once again hosting Bolton in the rearranged tie. Everton were very much the better team throughout the match with Martin O'Neill's men falling short in their defensive and creative capacities. Nikica Jelavic made it three goals in five starts, tapping home a Magaye Gueye low cross after 23-minutes. Substitute David Vaughan failed to clear a ball and as he trapped it with his attempted clearance, his trailing came through and somehow managed to put the ball into his own net to set up the Merseyside derby in the semis just 11-minutes into the second half.

It was an emotional White Hart Lane as Bolton returned to contest the quarter final after that shocking Fabrice Muamba collapse. Unfortunately, the heart didn't rule over the football and Tottenham took the lead 17-minutes from time, Ryan Nelsen heading a corner home for his first Spurs goal. Gareth Bale then made it 2-0, slotting a one-on-one past Adam Bogdan just three minutes later. Kevin Davies did pull a goal back for Bolton in the final minute of normal time, but any hopes of a miracle comeback were dashed when Louis Saha made it 3-1 in injury time. Tottenham now set up a London derby against Chelsea at Wembley.

2011/2012 FA Cup Quarter Finals and Semi Final Draw

There are times where football comes second and unfortunately the FA Cup quarter finals was one of these times. Bolton took on Tottenham at White Hart Lane in the 5:30pm Saturday slot. The teams were level at 1-1 before disaster struck. 23-year old Fabrice Muamba suddenly collapsed in the middle of the pitch. Play was stopped instantly as everyone realised the severity of the issue and medics came onto the pitch within a minute. Muamba required CPR as his heart had stopped and remained on the pitch for six minutes. Once he had been put on a stretcher, he was wheeled down the tunnel still receiving CPR and a defibrillator had also been used. He was escorted, via ambulance, to London's heart hospital where he remains in a critical condition and anaesthetised. Shortly after Muamba had left the pitch, referee Howard Webb had no other choice but to abandon the match with players from both teams in a state of shock. Bolton's Premiership game against Aston Villa has also been postponed as Bolton and the rest of the world of football continue to pray for Fabrice Muamba.

Earlier that day, Everton hosted Sunderland in the first of the quarter finals. Phil Bardsley put Sunderland ahead after 11-minutes with a thunderous strike that found the bottom corner. Tim Cahill headed Everton level ten minutes later to set up a replay at the Stadium of Light.

Both Sunday quarter-finals took place with a minute's applause in hope for the stricken Muamba. Chelsea hosted Leicester and Roberto Di Matteo was able to keep hold of his 100% start. Gary Cahill scored his first Chelsea goal after 11-minutes before Salomon Kalou made it 2-0 five minutes later. Fernando Torres ended his goal drought with Chelsea's third on 66-minutes with Jermaine Beckford pulling one back ten minutes later. Torres then found himself on the score-sheet once again six minutes from time before Ben Marshall made 4-2 three minutes later. Raul Meireles had the final say in injury time to give Chelsea the comprehensive 5-2 victory.

Liverpool hosted last year's runners-up Stoke City in the final quarter final. Luis Suarez opened the scoring on 22-minutes with a fantastically placed shot into the bottom corner. That lead only lasted three minutes when Peter Crouch headed home from a corner that was actually a goal kick. The winning goal came 11-minutes into the second half when a flue one-two between Stewart Downing and Steven Gerrard resulted in the winger scoring only his second goal in a Liverpool shirt.

The winner of Everton against Sunderland will face Liverpool in the semi-final which could potentially set-up a Merseyside derby at Wembley. Chelsea await the winners of Tottenham and Bolton which could potentially set-up a London derby in football's capital.

Chelsea and Tottenham Squeeze Through

Chelsea and Tottenham have both managed to make it to quarter finals of the FA Cup by overcoming tough replays. Chelsea travelled to St. Andrews to face Birmingham City in Roberto Di Matteo's first game in charge. Birmingham had arguably the better chances in the first half but it was Juan Mata who added to his third and fourth round goals with the opener nine minutes into the second half. Raul Meireles then added a second four minutes later to almost secure their passage. Mata had a brilliant opportunity to put the tie beyond all doubt but, just like at Stamford Bridge, he had a penalty saved by Colin Doyle. Birmingham again couldn't convert any chances, despite creating many, and Chelsea will now face Leicester at home in the next round.

Spurs hosted Stevenage after playing out a 0-0 draw in the initial tie. The shock was on the cards when Joel Byrom converted a penalty after just three minutes, Tottenham's first concession this tournament. Stevenage became the only team not to concede a goal so far in the FA Cup this season, but only lasted until the 26th minute when Jermain Defoe chested a long ball down before lashing his shot home. Tottenham were then awarded a penalty of their own ten minutes into the second half which Emmanuel Adebayor converted to give the hosts the lead. Gareth Bale hit the crossbar before Mark Roberts did the same for Stevenage at the other end. The game was then wrapped up when Defoe netted for a second time to set up a tie against Bolton in the next round.

FA Cup Quarter Final Draw

Liverpool v Stoke City

Chelsea or Birmingham City v Leicester City

Stevenage Borough or Tottenham Hotspur v Bolton Wanderers

Everton v Sunderland

FA Cup Fifth Round

Chelsea 1-1 Birmingham: Andre Villas-Boas' position has become further in doubt with their latest disappointing performance. David Murphy put Birmingham ahead on 19-minutes to set up a possible shock. Juan Mata missed a first half penalty but Daniel Sturridge saved Chelsea's blushes with the equaliser just after the hour mark. Birmingham will still have a great opportunity for the upset at St. Andrew's in the replay.

Everton 2-0 Blackpool: The match was over before Blackpool knew it. Royston Drenthe opened the scoring within the first minute with Denis Stracqualursi making it 2-0 after just five minutes. Blackpool hit the crossbar but that was as close as they would come to scoring.

Millwall 0-2 Bolton: Many predicted a cup shock could have come from the New Den, but it wasn't to be. Ryo Miyaichi has started his on-loan Bolton career with a goal after three minutes. David N'Gog assured Bolton of the quarter finals 13-minutes into the second half.

Norwich 1-2 Leicester: Perhaps the biggest shock of the round sees Premiership Norwich ousted by Championship Leicester. Sean St Ledger put the visitors ahead after just four minutes. Wes Hoolahan equalised after initially missing a penalty on 22-minutes. But David Nugent sees Leicester through with the winner 20-minutes from time.

Sunderland 0-2 Arsenal: Arsenal's embarrassing week got worse following their 4-0 demolition against AC Milan. Kieran Richardson smashed Sunderland ahead six minutes before half-time before an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal on 77-minutes assured Arsene Wenger's position got a little weaker.

Crawley 0-2 Stoke: Stoke's day could have been so much once Rory Delap was shown red for a studs in challenge after 17-minutes. But a penalty from Jon Walters three minutes before half-time and a second from Peter Crouch seven minutes after half-time was enough to put last year's runners-up through.

Stevenage 0-0 Tottenham: Stevenage get the money spinning replay as they get to travel White Hart Lane. It does mean that neither team has conceded a goal so far in this competition this season.

Liverpool 6-1 Brighton: Brighton committed football suicide as they scored three own goals. Martin Skrtel headed Liverpool ahead on five minutes before Kazenga LuaLua equalised from a free-kick on 38-minutes. Liam Bridcutt scored the first own goal just before half-time to give Gus Poyet a very different team-talk. Andy Carroll put the hosts 3-1 ahead 12-minutes into the second half before two goals in in three minutes virtually killed the game off. Bridcutt netted his second own goal on 71-minutes with Lewis Dunk making 5-1 three minutes later. Luis Suarez would get the final say as he made it six with five minutes remaining, four minutes after he made a hash of a penalty.

FA Cup Fifth Round Draw

Chelsea v Birmingham City
Crawley Town v Stoke City
Everton v Blackpool/Sheffield Wednesday
Liverpool v Brighton & Hove Albion
Millwall/Southampton v Bolton Wanderers
Norwich City v Leicester City
Stevenage Borough v Tottenham Hotspur
Sunderland/Middlesbrough v Arsenal

FA Cup Fourth Round

Watford 0-1 Tottenham: Rafael Van Der Vaart scores the only goal of the game four minutes before half-time. Watford were denied twice by the woodwork as Spurs squeeze through.

Everton 2-1 Fulham: Danny Murphy gave Fulham the lead on 13-minutes from the spot. A good header from Denis Stracqualursi headed Everton level on 26-minutes before Marouane Fellaini won the game with 18-minutes left.

QPR 0-1 Chelsea: Chelsea progress via a dubious penalty decision. Danny Sturridge went over far too easily but earned the spot-kick which Juan Mata converted just after the half-hour mark. The racism row between the clubs was very much highlighted by the fact that the teams didn't shake hands at the start of the match.

Liverpool 2-1 Manchester United: Another match surrounded by the racism war saw Patrice Evra have a standard game despite getting fervently booed by the Anfield faithful. Daniel Agger gave the hosts the lead after David De Gea failed to collect a corner after coming for it on twenty minutes. Ji-Sung Park levelled for United after converting Rafael's pull back cross on 48-minutes. The game looked to be heading for a replay until poor defending allowed substitute Dirk Kuyt one-on-one with De Gea, the Dutchman blasted the ball home with three minutes left. The racism row was then highlighted with a police investigation into a Liverpool fan making a 'monkey' gesture at Evra.

Blackpool 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday: Hillsborough will witness a replay after a late minute penalty save Blackpool's blushes. Clinton Morrison put Wednesday ahead six minutes into the second half before Kevin Phillips converted the last minute spot-kick to force a replay.

Bolton 2-1 Swansea: Bolton came from behind to continue from where they left off against Liverpool. Luke Moore put the visitors ahead three minutes before half-time until former Swan, Darren Pratley, equalised on the interval. Chris Eagles then won the game for Bolton ten minutes after the restart to put them through.

Hull 0-1 Crawley: After a great cup run last year, Crawley created another cup upset with Matt Tubbs scoring 11-minutes into the second half to dump Championship side Hull out.

Leicester 2-0 Swindon: Jermaine Beckford scored both goals on four minutes then 52-minutes to put themselves into the fifth round.

Millwall 1-1 Southampton: St.Mary's will also witness a replay after Millwall scored a late equaliser. Rickie Lambert put the Saints ahead on half an hour before Darius Henderson equalised five minutes before the end to force a second leg.

Sheffield United 0-4 Birmingham: Last year's Carling Cup winners progress into the fifth round with a convincing win over Sheffield United. Nathan Redmond put the Blues ahead after 17-minutes before Adam Rooney made it 2-0 eight minutes from half-time. Wade Elliot made it three 12-minutes into the second half and Rooney added the fourth 13-minutes before the end.

Stevenage 1-0 Notts County: A Damion Stewart own goal after 11-minutes puts Stevenage into the next round.

West Brom 1-2 Norwich: Norwich repeat the scoreline from last week's Premiership match. Grant Holt put Norwich ahead on 34 minutes before Marc-Antoine Fortune equalised eight minutes into the second half. The winner came six minutes from the end with Simeon Jackson putting Norwich through.

Brighton 1-0 Newcastle: A Mike Williamson own goal with 15-minutes to play secures Brighton's cup shock over their Premiership opponents.

Sunderland 1-1 Middlesbrough: Barry Robson put Boro ahead after 15-minutes to begin a possible cup upset. But Frazier Campbell equalised 13-minutes into the second half to set up a replay at Riverside.

Arsenal 3-2 Aston Villa: Arsenal progress on the back of a fortuitous comeback. Richard Dunne headed Villa ahead after 32-minutes before Darren Bent made it 2-0 just before half-time. Dunne then turned into the villain by conceding a penalty eight minutes into the second half, Robin Van Persie converted it. Poor defending allowed Theo Walcott in behind before Alan Hutton's clearance rebounded back off the winger and into the net to equalise three minutes later. Darren Bent was then also guilty of fouling Laurent Koscielny in the box and referee Mike Jones again pointed to the spot. Van Persie again stepped up and converted for a second time to make 3-2 on the hour mark.

Jonjo Shelvey (68), Andy Carroll (89) and Stewart Downing (90) completed the Friday night rout.

Non-League Sides in Second Round

With the FA Cup first round having taken place this weekend, it's good to see how many non-league teams are now just one game away from a possible huge third round tie:

AFC Totton are currently fourth in the Evostik Southern Premier division but they smashed eight past nine man Bradford Park Avenue to progress. Jonathan Davies and Mike Gosney both scored twice, Michael Charles also found the net with substitute Stefan Brown scoring a hat-trick in fifteen minutes. Adam Clayton did pull a goal back to make it 2-1 for Bradford but Totton, based in Hampshire, steam through. They will now host Bristol Rovers in the next round.

Gateshead are currently sixth in the Blue Square Premier and they saw off fellow non-leaguers Blyth Spartans.  Goals from Jon Shaw and Michael Cummins secured the win. Gateshead have been rewarded with another all non-league tie at home to either Hinckley or Tamworth, a fantastic opportunity to reach the third round.

Chelmsford City sit fifth in the Blue Square south and beat struggling Blue Square Premier AFC Telford. Aiden Palmer and substitute Craig Parker made it 2-0 before David Rainford scored a brace to secure the crushing victory. They will now face Macclesfield at home in the second round.

Bath City are struggling at the bottom of the Blue Square Premier but they will bring Dagenham and Redbridge back to Twerton Park for a replay. Sean Canham got the possible upset up and running but Brian Woodall equalising to set up the replay. If they win it, they will earn a home tie against either Exeter City or Walsall.

Fleetwood Town are producing great results, sitting second in the Blue Square Premier, they secured the scalp of Wycombe to progress. Andy Mangan broke the deadlock before Richard Brodie was sent off, but it didn't matter as Jamie Vardy secured the win ten minutes from the end. They have a home tie in the next round against Yeovil Town.

Hinckley United (eighteenth in the Blue Square North) and Tamworth (eleventh in the Blue Square Premier) will meet again after a 2-2 draw. Hinckley's keeper was sent off five minutes before half-time but all four goals game within the last twelve minutes. Andre Gray put Hinckley ahead before Iyseden Christie equalised from the spot. Lloyd Kerry though he'd won the game for Hinckley two minutes from time but Tamworth equalised in injury time through Kyle Patterson. The winners will earn another all non-league tie, away to Gateshead.

Luton Town, once a mainstay in the Football League now seventh in the Blue Square Premier saw off Northampton to progress. Substitute Adam Watkins won the game with the only goal ten minutes from time. Luton will face Cheltenham at home in the second round.

Maidenhead United sit eighteenth in the Blue Square south but get the chance to travel to Aldershot after holding them to a 1-1 draw. Anthony Thomas started the possible upset after just seven minutes but substitute Michael Rankine equalised twelve minutes from time. If they win the replay they will travel to face the winners of Morecambe or Sheffield Wednesday who play today.

Stourbridge are seventh in the Evostik Southern Premier and bring struggling Plymouth back to the War Memorial Athletic Ground after a six goal thriller. Warren Feeney gave Plymouth the lead before Aaron Drake and Ryan Rowe made it 2-1 to the visitors. Carl Fletcher equalised before Sean Gebbis made it 3-2 from the spot, a decision that saw Robbie Williams sent off. Onismor Bhasera made it 3-3 with two minutes left before Conor Hourihane was also sent off in injury time.

Grimsby Town were also mainstays in the Football League once upon town, now sit sixteenth in the Blue Sqaure Premier held Port Vale to a goalless draw, if they win they'll face fellow non-leaguers Salisbury away in the second round. Redbridge (eighteenth in the Ryman Isthmian Division One North) and Oxford City (first in the Evostik Southern Premier) also played out a goalless draw and will reconvene for a replay. The winner will face an away trip to Crawley.

Salisbury City sit sixteenth since being promoted into the Blue Square South. They beat fellow non-leaguers Arlesey to progress. Dan Fitchett's opener was cancelled out by Arlesey's Stuart Sinclair. But a penalty from Jake Reid and a third from substitute Adam Kelly earned the win. They will face either Port Vale or Grimsby at home.

Sutton United currently sit second since also being promoted into the Blue Sqaure South. An only goal from Craig Watkins was enough to see off Kettering. They have been given a home tie in the second and need to see of Notts County to progress to the third round.

Cambridge United (third in the Blue Square Premier) and Wrexham (first in the Blue Square Premier) played out a 2-2 draw on Friday night. Andy Morrell's opener was cancelled out by Josh Coulson. Morrell then made it 2-1 Wrexham on the hour before Coulson equalised again in injury time to take it to a replay. The winners will face Brentford away.
