Watson's Wigan Winner

Against the odds, Wigan Athletic have beaten Manchester City in the FA Cup final. It was a final full of intrigue where both teams punched and counter punched before substitute Ben Watson won the game for Wigan with the only goal in injury time. This came after City were reduced to ten men after Pablo Zabaleta became only the third man to ever be sent off in a FA Cup final.

From the beginning, Manchester City didn't play the match how the script suggested; using their flamboyant talent to rip open the leaky Wigan defence and score numerous goals. In fact, it looked like a very lethargic and almost uncaring Manchester City. It may have been because the press were full of reports that Roberto Mancini will be getting sacked, to which the Italian rubbished after the match. But something wasn't quite there for City.

With the FA Cup sporting sky blue ribbons before a ball was kicked, it looked like it could have been an ominous omen especially when Joel Robles was called in to action early on from a Yaya Tour shot which the Spaniard managed to parry to safety.

Wigan were solid enough during the first period and would being creating chances of their own. Callum McManaman was unbelievable down the wing for Wigan all game and he made Gael Clichy look rather invisible. The Liverpudlian had the opening chance for Wigan in the first half when he ghosted in to the box before cutting back and just not putting enough curl on to his effort as it went wide.

Arouna Kone also had a couple of shots that didn't trouble the goal but Wigan were looking comfortable in possession, even if they went backwards during a lot of the time. City's glittering chance fell to Carlos Tevez who had a go from six yards. Joel was diving to his left and if Tevez had shot in to that corner he probably would have still scored. But the Argentine tried to hit it back across Joel but the Spaniard managed to swing his outstretched leg to deflect the ball over his goal.

Wigan thought that they should have had a penalty late on in the first half when Roger Espinoza dramatically went over under a Pablo Zabaleta challenge. There was contact but the ball looked to have rolled too far for the Honduran and the manner in which he fell to floor may have put doubts in to Andre Marriner's head.

City's attacking fell extremely quiet in the second half as Wigan began to boss it. McManaman was again causing all sorts of problems and drew the two yellow cards in the match. But neither keeper was really tested for much of the second half despite the attacking play.

That was until the last ten minutes when a late free-kick, won by McManaman, was taken by Shaun Maloney and it hit the top of the bar. City's task got harder with six minutes to go as McManaman looked to be breaking through. The winger just clipped the ball past the sliding Argentinian and Zabaleta couldn't avoid smashing in to McManaman. Zabaleta had already been booked and Marriner had no option but to brandish a second yellow and send the defender off.

The winner eventually came in the first minute of injury time from a corner, won by McManaman. Maloney whipped the ball in and substitute Watson managed to beat Jack Rodwell to the front post and sent his header past Joe Hart.

Wigan were going to be in Europe regardless of the result but they've managed to do it by winning the FA Cup for the first time in their history. Sadder history could be made though as Wigan could become the first team to lift the FA Cup yet still get relegated. It's also possibly a happy outcome for David Moyes who will now take charge of his first senior Manchester United match against Wigan in next season's Community Shield.

Holders Out After Another Aguero Moment, Wigan's Win Marred By Millwall Fans

Manchester City and Wigan will meet on the 11th May to determine who will win the 2012/2013 FA Cup. The 2011 winners made it through by beating the holders, Chelsea, in an end to end, tight fought contest. Wigan booked their place in to their first ever FA Cup final in the previous day after proving to be too much for Championship side Millwall.

The second semi-final was explosive from start to finish with both Petr Cech being called in to action early on. Eyebrows were raised over Roberto Mancini's decision to pick Costel Pantilimon over Joe Hart but the Romanian was tested too much in the first period. The deadlock was finally broken ten minutes before half-time when Samir Nasri somehow bulldozed his way to the six yard box before rolling the ball past the on-coming Cech. Vincent Kompany has a glorious chance to add a second shortly after when a Cech parry fell to him about eight yards out. But the Belgian hit his volley like a true defender and sliced it horribly wide.

City came out the better side in the second half and made it 2-0 just two minutes after the restart when Gareth Barry's header was met by Sergio Aguero, whose header fantastically curled in to the top corner. From the second goal, City were happy to soak up Chelsea pressure with the intention of catching them on the break.

But the introduction of Fernando Torres shortly after the hour mark proved to be an instant hit. A long throw saw both Torres and Demba Ba chase it and it somehow bamboozled the defenders. The ball ended up falling behind Ba but the striker managed to swivel round before smashing his effort past Pantilimon and in to the net, a similar goal to the quarter final one against Manchester United.

But Chelsea couldn't find a second goal although they did seem to have a decent penalty shout late on when Torres went down under a number of defenders pulling and pushing the Spaniard. Chris Foy said there was nothing in it and City held on to progress to the final.

Wigan watched that game in the knowledge that they were already through after beating Millwall. The Championship hadn't got used to width of the Wembley pitch and that proved to be their downfall on 25-minutes. Arouna Kone had found space down the wing and the Millwall defence all moved over the try and prevent the cross. But the Ivorian got a great ball to the far post where Shaun Maloney was waiting all on his own to side foot past David Forde with his first touch.

Millwall struggled to cope with Wigan during the first half but did have a chance to equalise early in the second half. The miss would end up haunting the London side as the victory was guaranteed 12-minutes before the end when Jordi Gomez fed Callum Mcmanaman in. McManaman managed to take the ball around Forde before slotting in to the empty net.

Unfortunately, Wigan's fantastic achievement has been marred by ugly scenes between the Millwall fans and police inside the stadium after the second goal was scored. What started the trouble is largely unknown but the violence ended up with some policemen injured and a few Millwall fans bloodied. What makes the violence even worse is knowing that there were children in the crowd who were crying because they were scared for their safety. These scenes should be witnessed by children who wanted to have big day out at Wembley with their parents to see their favourite football team. It's the first incident Millwall fans have ever been involved in and unfortunately, it probably won't be the last. But the scenes were ugly and the minority of the Millwall fans that did divulge in the violence need to be punished as football doesn't need this.

Chelsea Book Wembley Date

Chelsea will face Manchester City in the second semi-final of the FA Cup after edging out Manchester United in a drab Bank Holiday affair. One goal from Demba Ba four minutes in to the second half was enough for the defending champions to progress in a bid to make it five FA Cups in seven years.

Whether it was the fatigue from playing on Saturday, the extremely unusual early Monday kick-off or the cold weather, the proposed heavyweight contest never really sprung in to life during the course of the match. Mis-placed passing was the story of the whole game with Nani and Juan Mata being the most under-whelming during the first half.

The news before the match mainly concerned Wayne Rooney and his absence from the United squad, which was due to a groin injury picked up during the internationals. Robin Van Persie was also on the bench, leaving Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez, who had scored in his last four matches against Chelsea, up front. Fernando Torres was left on the bench for Chelsea with Ba up front on his own.

You know how well a half went when you're more interested in whether the two managers had shook hands before the match started, which they did. Chelsea were better in possession in the early going but neither keeper saw the ball for much of the half.

Ashley Cole was forced off with a hamstring injury on 17-minutes and had to be replaced by Ryan Bertrand, sources believe Cole may be out for two weeks. It took until the second period of the first half for United to begin to get in to the game and they looked comfortable around the box, but the final ball was lacking. The first real chance of the half came on the half hour mark when Ba's powerful shot from a narrow angle was saved by the legs of David De Gea. United's best chance of the half came five minutes before half time when Hernandez's swerving shot seemed to deceive Petr Cech but he managed to parry the ball with his feet.

The second half didn't start any better but the game changed when Mata's ball over the top was met by Ba with a superb volley which went past the stationary De Gea and in to the top corner. Any thoughts that the goal may have started United off were quashed pretty quickly as Chelsea looked the most likely to score a second.

The best chance for United to equalise came on the hour mark when a Welbeck cross-come-shot was met by Hernandez's head from six yards. But somehow Cech managed to throw an arm at the ball and miraculously turn it over the bar, a definite save of the season contender.

Straight from that chance, Mata went up the other end a blasted the ball from an acute angle which looked to have just hit the side netting and a goal kick was given. But replays showed De Gea got a hand to it which did actually stop the ball from going in and a corner should have been given. Eden Hazard also had a great chance to make it 2-0 when Michael Carrick inadvertently played him through but the Belgian dragged his shot wide.

United did have two potential chances to steal an equaliser late on through substitute Van Persie. The first was headed over the bar before the Dutchman found space when Patrice Evra played the ball back, but Van Persie could only hit his effort high over the woodwork. That just leaves the probable league now for United with Rafa Benitez still able to leave Chelsea with a trophy at the end of the season.

FA Cup Semi-Final Draw

Manchester United/Chelsea v Manchester City

Wigan Athletic v Millwall/Blackburn Rovers

FA Cup Quarter Final Results

Manchester United 2-2 Chelsea: Chelsea fight back from two goals down to force a replay back at Stamford Bridge. If United were reeling from their controversial European exit, it wasn't showing. They kicked in to gear almost immediately and were ahead after five minutes when Michael Carrick's inch perfect chip through ball was headed majestically past a marooned Petr Cech by Javier Hernandez, keeping his glittering record against Chelsea going. If anyone was reeling from their European exploits this week, it looked to be Chelsea as they still struggled to get in to the game and United doubled their lead after 11-minutes, the headline writer, Wayne Rooney, striking a free-kick that missed everyone on its way to the corner of the net.

As the first half progressed, United seemed to get a little complacent and began to give the ball away cheaply in their own half. Chelsea quickly gained momentum and began to pepper United's box, forcing a lot defensive headers and a couple of saves from David De Gea. The same continued in the second half and Chelsea pulled one back just before the hour mark; substitute Eden Hazard curling a sublime effort in to the far corner. Chelsea would level nine minutes later with a great counter attack that was finished off clinically by Ramires, the second time he's scored Chelsea's second to come back against United. Chelsea almost completed the turnaround late on, but Juan Mata's effort was stupendously saved by De Gea to make sure the replay was the outcome.

Millwall 0-0 Blackburn Rovers: These two hadn't produced a goalless draw since the early part of the last century, so this was perhaps well overdue. Unlike the two fixtures on Saturday, this game didn't produce anything of any real quality that would suggest that these two could really mix it in with the Premiership sides.

The 2004 finalists did look the more dangerous with Jake Kean being the busier keeper. Danny Shittu perhaps produced his best save with an outrageous 40-yard dipping strike that Kean tipped over the bar. Everyone will be hoping that the replay at Ewood Park is a bit better.

Manchester City 5-0 Barnsley: The 2011 Champions ease into the semi-finals with a lot of help from their driving force, Carlos Tevez. The Argentine made the headlines for the wrong reasons earlier this week but he put that behind him by opening the scoring after just 11-minutes; Yaya Toure feeding David Silva but the Spaniard's shot was saved on to the post before Tevez rolled it home. It was 2-0 on 27-minutes when Tevez pulled the ball back for Aleksandar Kolarov to expertly finish in to the bottom corner from just outside the box. Barnsley would go in at half-time 3-0 down as Tevez scored his second four minutes later, Silva playing the ball across the crowded six yard box, Tevez managed to turn on the ball and slot home.

Barnsley attacked more in the second half, but it was still to no avail. If the game wasn't over before half-time, it certainly was five minutes after the restart when Tevez scored his hat-trick after finishing off Samir Nasri's cross. Barnsley's best chance fell to Manchester United loanee, Ryan Tunnicliffe, who managed to break through the defence but couldn't beat Costel Pantilimon. The scoring was finished on 65-minutes with Tevez again involved. This time it was his cross that fell to Silva, the Spaniard's first effort was saved by Luke Steele before Silva converted on the second attempt.

Everton 0-3 Wigan Athletic: Perhaps a shock at Goodison Park as Wigan come out and put Everton to the sword, which means they will compete in their first ever FA Cup semi-final. It was three goals in three minutes and 23-seconds that won the game for Premiership side in a fierce relegation battle in the league.

Everton had started the better without really creating any chances. The atmosphere was unusually quiet in the stadium and it looked to impact the sluggish Everton players. Wigan grew in to the game and the deadlock was broken on the half hour mark when Maynor Figueroa headed home a Jordi Gomez cross. Everton were then struck down by a lifelong fan just moments later; Callum McManaman pounced on a poor pass from Phil Neville before running in to the box and finishing wonderfully past Jan Mucha. The damage was completed on 33-minutes when Arouna Kone's pass to Gomez was fantastically finished in to the bottom, leaving Mucha helpless. Everton never really looked like scoring and David Moyes will be extremely upset with his team's performance.

FA Cup Fifth (& Fourth) Round Results (Liverpool Thrash Swansea)

Manchester United 2-1 Reading: Two goals in three minutes help United progress to the quarter finals. Tumultuous second half pressure finally paid off on 69-minutes when first half substitute Nani fired home. United made it 2-0 three minutes later when Javier Hernandez managed to head home from a Tom Cleverley cross. United were made to sweat in the final ten minutes when sleepy defending saw Jobi McAnuff pull one back with nine minutes to play. But United held on to dump their third fellow Premier League side out of the tournament.

(Premiership) Liverpool 5-0 Swansea: Liverpool move ahead of Swansea after thrashing an under strength side. Only four players who beat QPR last week started at Anfield with Michael Laudrup setting his sights on the Capital One Cup final next week. The deadlock was broken nine minutes before half-time when Kemy Agustien tripped Luis Suarez from a corner. Steven Gerrard stepped up and converted despite Michel Vorm guessing right. Philippe Coutinho marked his debut with Liverpool's second just 16-minutes into the second half. A great piece of team play saw Jose Enrique play a one-two with Daniel Sturridge before the defender slotted home Liverpool's third on 50-minutes. The game was well and truly over six minutes later when Suarez finished off a pass from Stewart Downing. The rout was completed on 71-minutes when Wayne Routledge handled in the box and Sturridge this time stepped and converted with Vorm again guessing the right way. Liverpool are now nine points away from Tottenham in fourth place although everyone has a game in hand over them.

(Fourth Round) Chelsea 4-0 Brentford: Chelsea will now face Middlesbrough at the Riverside a week Wednesday after seeing off Brentford at the second attempt. It took nine minutes into the second half for Chelsea to take the lead through Juan Mata. Oscar finished off a lovely move to make it 2-0 on 68-minutes before Frank Lampard became Chelsea's highest goalscorer in the FA Cup with their third on 71-minutes. The rout was completed nine minutes from time when John Terry added his name to the scoresheet.

Huddersfield Town 1-4 Wigan Athletic: Wigan become the third Premiership side definitely in the quarter finals after avoiding an upset against Huddersfield. Callum McManaman put Wigan ahead just after the half hour mark before Arouna Kone doubled their lead five minutes before half time. James McArthur made it three 11-minutes into the second half before Lee Novak pulled one back on 62-minutes. Kone added the fourth in the final minute of normal time.

Manchester City 4-0 Leeds United: The 2011 winners ease themselves into the quarter finals after a much better display than that against Southampton last week. City took the lead after just five minutes when Yaya Toure scored after a couple of cutting one-twos. Sergio Aguero slightly refereed the game on the quarter of an hour mark when he stopped playing after believing to have been pulled back. Referee Mark Clattenburg agreed with him and pointed to the spot for the Argentine to slot home. Carlos Tevez made it 3-0 seven minutes into the second half before Aguero rounded it off with his second on 74-minutes.

Oldham Athletic 2-2 Everton: Oldham are at it again after dumping Liverpool out in the last round. Matt Smith scored two against the reds and scored the vital equaliser in the 94th minute to force a replay at Goodison. The dream was well and truly on when Jordan Obita put the League One side ahead after 13-minutes. The lead only lasted for 11-minutes when Victor Anichebe levelled. Everton looked to have it firmly in their grasp when Phil Jagielka headed Everton ahead three minutes into the second half. But Oldham came on strong in the last ten minutes and finally kept the dream alive with Smith's header in the depths of injury time.

Arsenal 0-1 Blackburn Rovers: After being knocked out by Bradford in the Capital One Cup this season, Arsenal have now been knocked out by Blackburn to become the eighth Premiership side to be ousted from the competition by a lower league opposition this season. Arsenal's biggest names were all on the bench and would watch Blackburn's only shot on target find the net courtesy of Colin Kazim-Richards on 72-minutes against the club he was briefly at as a boy. The cavalry did quickly emerge from the bench but couldn't prevent the Championship side from gaining this scalp.

Milton Keynes Dons 1-3 Barnsley: The 2007/08 semi-finalists are one game away from repeating that feat after overcoming their League One opposition. The Championship side took the lead after just three minutes through Chris Dagnall before Marlon Harewood made it 2-0 on 19-minutes. Dean Bowditch pulled a goal just after the hour mark and the prospect of 12-added minutes because of an injury looked to set up a tantalising finish. But Barnsley could breath after just a minute of the added time when Dagnall got his second to make it 3-1. Alan Smith was shown a red card in the 95th minute for a late attempted header which was perceived as a head-butt.

Luton Town 0-3 Millwall: Luton's magical run is over after succumbing to the Championship outfit. The 2004 runners-up have been in the news for the wrong reasons this week but this result gives them the headlines for the right reasons. James Henry took full advantage of a bad defensive error to give Millwall the lead on 12-minutes. On-loan Rob Hulse scored his first goal for the visitors nine minutes before half-time and Dany N'Guessan rounded the day off with the third four minutes from the end.
