2011- Year of the Jackpot as Adrian Lewis Comes of Age
25 year old Adrian 'Jackpot' Lewis overcame the 'Flying Scotsman' Gary Anderson in one of the most entertaining World Championship finals ever. Anderson won the first leg of the match but Lewis led from then onto seal the match 7-5. Everyone knew it was going to be a special night, especially after Lewis nailed a nine darter in just the third leg to get everyone off their feet and singing his name. You have to give Anderson the up most of credit as he never gave up fighting and pushed Lewis all the way. They averaged about the same overall and scored similarly, Lewis was just about more consistent and hit the big numbers when needed to pressurise. Lewis stormed to a 3-1 lead with superior finishing, Anderson was finishing well on the three darters but his overall doubles was poor. They headed for a break and Anderson used it to rejuvenate himself and he powered back to 3-3. Usually this may have worried Lewis but after his first major final earlier in the season in Dublin, Lewis was undeterred and fought again to re-take the lead. Anderson needed to break the sets where Lewis threw first but every time the Scotsman had an opportunity Lewis quickly recovered to break back and keep the darts. As the match grew, Anderson looked to be getting more tired and ended up going 6-4 behind with Lewis looking likely to win it there and then. However Anderson managed to force another set and lost 7-5. This sets up an unbelievable line-up for the Premier League which starts February 10th, Taylor, Wade, Anderson and Lewis have all booked their places with the remaining four places to be decided with wild cards.
