Gold Tally Stands At Nine

Super-human Saturday saw Team GB secure 16 more medals, moving up to third in the table with nine gold medals. One of those gold medals came in the Men's 200m T42 with Richard Whitehead winning in World Record time of 24.38 seconds.

Three bronze medals were won in Olympic Stadium today; Robin Womack scored a personal best of 11.34m in the Men's Shot Put F54/55/56 to claim bronze behind Poland's Karol Kozun, 11.36, and Iran's Jalil Bagheri Jeddi who set a Paralympics Record of 11.63. Gemma Prescott secured bronze in the Women's Club Throw F31/32/51 with a Regional Record of 20.50. Algeria's Mouni Gasmi won silver with 22.51 whilst Tunisia's Maroua Ibrahimi set a World Record of 23.43. Claire Williams also secured bronze in the Women's Discus F11/12 with a throw of 39.63. China's Hongxia Tang took silver with 39.91 whilst her countrywoman, Liangmin Zhang, set a Paralympics Record of 40.13.

There was more joy in the Velodrome as Neil Fachie, with guide Barney Storey, set a World Record 1:01.351 to claim gold in the Men's Individual B 1km Time Trial. That was followed up by Jody Cundy securing bronze in the Men's Individual C4 Pursuit, finishing behind Czech Republic's Jiri Jezek and Romania's Carol-Eduard Novak. Jon-Allan Butterworth followed yesterday's silver medal up with a second silver in the Men's Individual C5 Pursuit, only Australia's Michael Gallagher stood in Butterworth's way for gold. It was a happier story for Sarah Storey who claimed her second gold in these games in the Women's Individual C4 -5 500m Time Trial, just adding to her already impressive collection.

Two medals were taken in today's Equestrian events. Natasha Baker won gold in the Individual Championship Test Grade II, finishing eight hundredths of a second ahead of silver medallist Britta Napel of Germany. Lee Pearson followed that up by winning silver Individual Championship Test Grade Ib, Pearson lost out to Australia's Joann Formosa.

A second medal was won in the Judo; Samuel Ingram managed to win silver after losing out Puerto Rico's Jorge Marcillis Hierrezuelo in the final. There were also two medals won in the Shooting events; Matthew Skelhon took silver in the Mixed R3-10m Air Rifle Prone-SH1 event. Cedric Fevre on France secured gold with World Finals Record of 706.7. James Bevis lost out by .1 in a shoot-out to finish with bronze in the Mixed R5-10m Air Rifle Prone-SH2, France's Raphael Voltz won the shoot-out with Ukraine's Vasyl Kovalchuk winning gold with a Final Paralympic Record of 706.4.

There was gold for Eleanor Simmonds in the Women's 400m Freestyle S6 event. Simmonds set a World Record time of 5:19.17 to claim that magnificent gold medal. That piece of magic was followed up by Matthew Whorwood winning bronze in the Men's 400m Freestyle. Whorwood finished behind Sweden's Anders Olsson and Ireland's Darragh McDonald who finished 7.88 seconds ahead of the rest to win gold. Claire Cashmore also took silver in the pool. Cashmore finished 3.22 seconds behind Russia's Olesya Vladykina in the Women's 100m Breaststroke SB8, the Russian set a World Record with a time of 1:17.17.
