Earlier that day, Everton hosted Sunderland in the first of the quarter finals. Phil Bardsley put Sunderland ahead after 11-minutes with a thunderous strike that found the bottom corner. Tim Cahill headed Everton level ten minutes later to set up a replay at the Stadium of Light.
Both Sunday quarter-finals took place with a minute's applause in hope for the stricken Muamba. Chelsea hosted Leicester and Roberto Di Matteo was able to keep hold of his 100% start. Gary Cahill scored his first Chelsea goal after 11-minutes before Salomon Kalou made it 2-0 five minutes later. Fernando Torres ended his goal drought with Chelsea's third on 66-minutes with Jermaine Beckford pulling one back ten minutes later. Torres then found himself on the score-sheet once again six minutes from time before Ben Marshall made 4-2 three minutes later. Raul Meireles had the final say in injury time to give Chelsea the comprehensive 5-2 victory.
Liverpool hosted last year's runners-up Stoke City in the final quarter final. Luis Suarez opened the scoring on 22-minutes with a fantastically placed shot into the bottom corner. That lead only lasted three minutes when Peter Crouch headed home from a corner that was actually a goal kick. The winning goal came 11-minutes into the second half when a flue one-two between Stewart Downing and Steven Gerrard resulted in the winger scoring only his second goal in a Liverpool shirt.
The winner of Everton against Sunderland will face Liverpool in the semi-final which could potentially set-up a Merseyside derby at Wembley. Chelsea await the winners of Tottenham and Bolton which could potentially set-up a London derby in football's capital.
