Barney Slides Past The Muffin Man

Raymond Van Barneveld joined Van Der Voort as the only Dutchmen into the second round. Barney's first round opponent was 'The Muffin Man' Steve Hine. Van Barneveld looked relaxed during his walk-on but started poorly and lost the first two legs. Barney did then pull it back to 2-2 but Hine, who was playing excellent darts, held on to take the first set. Barneveld came back from the break fired up to win the next three sets but Hine deserves a lot of credit because he was never too far away.

Barney will meet Kevin McDine in the second round after he beat Barrie Bates earlier in the night. Bates is another player in this tournament who underwhelmed, although McDine didn't play fantastically either. McDine went 2-0 ahead before Bates managed to pull a set back but McDine won 3-1.

Last night's preliminary qualifier exited again. South African Devon Petersen had earlier edged his match 4-3 against Guyana man Madhoo. Petersen met Jamie Caven in the first round and took the first set using darts that Phil Taylor had given him once upon a time. Petersen kept making Caven work hard but a final 161 check-out saw him beat the African 3-1.

Caven will play against Colin Osbourne in the second round after 'The Wizard' saw off Yorkshireman Chris Thompson. Thompson wasn't at the races for the first two sets to give Osbourne the 2-0 lead. However Thompson hit back with some very good darts to pull a set back before Osbourne edged the fourth set to win 3-1.
