Introduction into the World Cup

June 11th marked the start of the 19th FIFA World Cup, this one however is a very special World Cup as it the first to be held in Africa. Nine cities in South Africa will be playing host to the greatest spectacle in the footballing calender, starting off in Soccer City and culminating in the same stadium for the grand finale on July 11th.

We have the usual suspects in England, Holland, Spain, Portugal, World champions Italy and ever-present Brazil entering the fray. But we do have a few shocks in North Korea, Slovenia, Algeria, Chile and Serbia all of whom could produce some shock results and provide more entertainment in what will be a very entertaining World Cup.

The main attraction of this year's World Cup won't be seeing the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristaino Ronaldo, Fernando Torres or Wayne Rooney gracing the pitch and setting the world alight. It will be the sound of the vuvuzelas, South Africa's answer to a football horn. Those of you who witnessed the 2009 Confederations Cup, also held in South Africa, will be used to the swarm of bees coming from the television. They are very loud and make up for empty seats in stadiums but I'm sure you will get quite accustomed to them by the end and may even miss them when it's over!
